Title: Political Extremism and Insider Threat Early Warning

While monitoring for root causes of insider risk and addressing precipitating events in the insider-threat kill chain are established best practices, political extremism represents a unique challenge. On one hand, employee extremism can threaten the organization’s workforce, brand, and reputation and may result in significant financial loss. On the other hand, organizations must consider legal issues, free speech rights, privacy interests, employee morale, and workplace culture. While not easy, determination of a “comfort zone” between these competing factors, tripwires, and response plan must be done in advance. Using case studies as illustrations, presenters will outline a formula for dealing with political extremism and insider risk decision-making, with pointers on tailoring these strategies for specific organizational types.
